 Ta Da!!!  I think I’ve accomplished what I set out to do…FROM FLOOR TO ADORÉ. I absolutely love the Tuscan/French country vibe I was aim for.  It’s neutral, antique, feminine, and masculine/rustic all wrapped up in one. The walls as painful as they were to tackle I couldn’t be happier…smooth as a baby’s bottom, haha, and 1000% times better than orange peel there and knock down there.

Quick back story for those of you who’ve never hear of, The One Room Challenge™!  It is a bi-annual event and currently in its eighteenth season. In partnership with Better Homes & Gardens, many different design influencers participate to makeover one room or space over the course of 6 weeks and share their process.

This week we welcome an antique piece of furniture to our home. Welcome the new vanity desk! 

A lovely desk that I traveled to LA…yes Los Angeles…and yes San Diego is near but we are a city that is 10-15 minutes from the Mexican boarder so it’s a bit of a drive…over 250 miles round trip to be exact.  A.K.A.  I’m Insane!  Nonetheless when I saw the desk I was sold I had to have it.  So pretty antique, French, and in need of work…meaning cheap.  SOLD at $125.

Plus the desk on my mood board as gorgeous as it was, it was also $450 and in the U.K. Ugh! Which means not in budget.

Oh work indeed I would do and now think to myself which is worse smoothing textured walls or removing wood finish on antique intricate furniture?! Hmmm. Thankfully my mom came to visit and help me out BIG TIME! Love you Mom! We tackled the desk and did multiple coats of striper and then sanded it down to get it to the natural wood. Bleach, a matte poly to protect, and a polish of the brass hardware and I have a gorgeous vanity desk for our bedroom!

I found on Offer Up a wall mirror. For $50! It is definitely a lot smaller then our current oversized mirror but it’s perfect for the design and look I’m going for. And gathered and dried pampas grass, from down the road, for one of the corners of the room.

I mentioned before I wanted to switch out the hardware on the nightstands to brass. Well didn’t know how EXPENSIVE hardware can be! Eeek. It okay if you need four or so handles but I need 18!!! Scoured the internet for a couple of days and finally found these beauties at discounthomefurnishings.com for only $0.95 each! Total $24.72 with tax SCORE!

Subtle I know but it really makes a huge difference in person. Last but not least for this week I got the rug! The beautiful Loloi II Layla Collection in Ocean/Rust. I got the 8’ x 10’ perfect for a Queen bed.

The One Room Challenge!  It is a bi-annual event and currently in its eighteenth season. In partnership with Better Homes & Gardens, many different design influencers participate to makeover one room or space over the course of 6 weeks and share their process.

For me this week is all about DIY’ing our walls and my BIG MESS UP!  So, this is NOT a How-To…but a What-Not-to-Do.

You know the saying “if they can do it, I can too”?!  This always tends to be my mentality, and can clearly get me into some hot water from time to time.  Also, it may be one of the reasons we call ourselves, Curious Lees.

I want to smooth out our walls, smooth as butter.  A level 5 they call it in the industry.  Our walls are this atrocious orange peel with some walls orange peel knocked down and some not.  It’s just awful.  To add to that we have many outlets or items that have caused holes in the walls, an old security system, an old doorbell system, in the wall vacuum inlet, and needing to move all the canned lighting which will create more holes.  So perfect time to smooth the walls out.  Let’s go!

 Step 1: Research– YouTube, Google, Pinterest everything I can, to find on how to smooth out walls and pick a way and go.

Step 2: Find a “Tester” Area– We have this small alcove right in front of our bedroom that is pointless but a small area I could easily test on.

Step 3: Buy/Collect Tools & Supplies– I luckily had the majority of all items needed.  Gifts from my father as well as from a friend’s father…they definitely set me up well.  I only needed to purchase the joint compound and mud pan along with primer and paint later.  I did purchase the magic trowel, as well, but mostly for the master bedroom and not this small space.

Step 4: Get After It– I scrapped away massive chunks of paint, then added the joint compound as smooth as I possibly could.  I found it easier and easier, after some time, learning the movements.  Then let it dry, add a second coat, and finally sand to a smoooooth finish.  Boy was the sanding messy!  Like someone decided that walls should just bleed flour the second it’s touched with sandpaper.  Hey at least I had a mask on-hand and at the ready give the current coronavirus times.

Step 5: Clean Up-…err onto step 6.

Step 6: Realize You didn’t research HOW to clean up & make a huge mistake that you will then clean for hours! Well, as I mentioned I have the majority of the tools already, including a shop vacuum.  Brilliant!  I bring it down, plug it in, and suck up all that “wall flower.”  The mess I made, the dry wall particles wisping quickly into the vacuum tube was just so satisfying to see.  Until I was done, and I turned around to shut off the machine. 

It was the biggest cloud of dust I’d ever seen, and it was in my house traveling up the stairs, in the laundry room, and hopefully that was just the spread of it.  I yell “no no no no no!”  That’s all I could muster out of my mouth in English.  I heard Michael yelling down to me “babe, what’s happening, are you okay, is there a fire?”  It had even exploded into our office where Michael was working.  I thought to myself, OMG, Chloe, you idiot!  But how, how?! 

I sucked it up into the vacuum…well turns out there was not a filter installed, so the output was simply everything that i had vacuumed, directed into a focused plume, directly up the stairs.  I was covered in so much white dust I looked like a grandmother at a Cali cartel party. 

Please learn from me. Clean-up IS just as important as the task at hand, and do a little research before diving in.  I had to clean for a couple more hours (longer than it took to make the mess) and the plume had reached into our kitchen and part of our living room. Ugh!

Lesson learned and time to move on to the REAL deal. 

First things first…I bought a dust bag to insert into the vacuum and tested it outside before using in the master bedroom. Whoot whoot, success! 

From there the drywall process is the same as before except a few additions.  We hire out the electrical moves and installation.  We needed to move all three canned lights in the ceiling.  They were off-center from bumping out the closet and I want a chandelier in the middle.  We also added two wall light electrical set-ups to each side of the bed.  And finally, one additional outlet on my side, we only had one on Michael’s side and so this made it much more convenient.

 We split the room in half working on each half up until finished with sanding. We added two coats of mud on the walls and then sanded smooth.  We then noticed areas that needed more so we added a third layer of patches. Then we moved the bed and switched to the other side. This time I added a thicker first coat and sanded after. Then the second coat was for patching. I was so exhausted and in a lot of pain in my hands/wrists at this point. I failed to film or capture pictures of the massive mess we made. The paper on the floor hardly helped. Wanting to give up but knew I had to just continue on…I cleaned up for a few hours and then it was time to paint.

Who says it never snows in San Diego!?!

After all that sanding paint is a wall in the park, really shows what a little perspective can do. We used all Benjamin Moore paint for the primer, ceiling, walls, and trim. Once we put the first coat of primer we could see even MORE imperfections. But I was NOT going to sand anymore so I decided to patch with the mud and use a slightly damp tiling sponge to smooth out the patches. It worked.

I was going to use the very popular Chantilly Lace for the wall color. I got it from Benjamin Moore as well as a color match from Home Depot. I knew our room was already on the cooler side with the lighting we have being North facing so I also looked for a warmer white, I opted to try Atrium White. Once I painted the colors in the room Chantilly Lace was all wrong. It was way too blue/grey and I wanted warmth, cozy and inviting. So Atrium White it is. It was perfect just a subtle hint of warm yellow to make it a true warm white.

• Ceiling we used Benjamin Moore Flat Ceiling paint.
• Walls we went with Benjamin Moore Scuff-X paint in matte.
• Trim we used Benjamin Moore Scuff-X paint in satin.

And I still have a lot to do.

So far with all of my searching and hunting I’ve come to one conclusion; furniture and décor is expensive!  Haha, oh man, my budget is not going to go very far if I get my dream items.  Oy Vey! 

Aren’t they just dreamy? Swoon!! Unfortunately, I have to be practical. So…

What is My Budget?

So, we have a lot and I mean a lot of work to do on our house.  And it’s more than just smooth some walls and paint.  We have major landscaping projects and terracing as well as needing a new roof and windows, yes windows (they are 20+ years old and a handful have broken seals). Ugh!

So when I told Michael I wanted to fully makeover our master bedroom he said “go for it but in terms of budget, just keep in mind that any amount of money you spend on the master will be taken from other projects around the house.”  Which means there is no way I can get the glorious Restoration Hardware Bed and other spendy items.  So, it’s time to hunt high & low and lower to find affordable alternatives. And I think I found some pretty good ones!

What I’ve Bought So Far

#1 – The Mattress + Sheets & Pillows $2,400 total (gulp!)

As you’ve seen in our mattress has been on the floor and it is old and just BAD, so we need an upgrade.  For this purchase we decided not to skimp on the quality because honestly you guys, we’re getting old!

After hours of googling and talking with friends and family we decided to pull the trigger on the Purple mattress.  We cannot be more thrilled!  We went with:

#2 – The Bed $450

Yes, that’s right not $2,000, just $450 and I couldn’t be happier!  It’s upholstered, it’s metal, and it’s a canopy- SOLD! I bought the Furniture of America Karis Contemporary Grey Metal Canopy Bed.

When buying this bed however, I was skeptical because the description of the dimensions did not accurately state the height (55.88 inches). That would be barely over 4.5 feet tall, made no sense. The height of the top bar is very important to us.  Michael is 6’ 3” and so we needed to make sure he wouldn’t be hitting his head getting in and out of bed.  I also wanted to make sure it was high enough to not compete with the chandelier I plan to hang inside it.

After looking at many photos and reviews, I pulled the trigger and just knew the second it arrived we needed to put it together to see if it was going to work. And it did, it’s 90.5 inches tall, perfecto! Oh and we decided to not install the 3 middle bars and it is completely sturdy without.

I noticed it is out of stock so here is an alternative.

#3 – Faux Leather Pillow Cases, Set of 2 + Pillow Inserts $47 total

To keep up the masculine vibe, I’ve gotta add a little leather with the Homfiner Faux Leather Throw Pillow Covers, 18 x 18 inch Set of 2 and Down and Feather Decorative Throw Pillows Inserts 18 x 18 Set of 2 for $19.

#4 – Black Curtain Rods, 2 $74

I think these curtain rods are going to play well in the space.  They have the curved corners so it will bring a French vibe into the space as well as block out all of the light.  I purchased 2 of them for both the window and the sliding glass door.

#5 – Velvet Curtains, 4 $62 each

These are gorgeous and will definitely bring warmth and romance to the space.  I saw these on Jenna Sue Design (she’s rockin’ it at interior design and renovating) and so glad I ordered them.  I ordered 4 in the color, Ivory.

#6 – Brass Wall Light Scones, 2 $62 each

These type of wall scones are a couple hundred everywhere, but I managed to find these at Target.  I think the brass will look great next to the iron bars of the canopy bed.  These do need to be hardwired in so we’ll see how easy these are to install.

#8 – Linen Duvet Cover $223

This was a bit of a splurge.  I was looking at cotton and just really wanted something that will still look good if it’s a bit wrinkled and not properly steamed everyday (ain’t nobody got time for that).  So I decided linen was the way to go.  Now these are from Pottery Barn and honestly I looked all over and every linen duvet I came across were all about the same price.

Wait for one of their sales, they are constantly hosting sales on all sorts of items. The regular price of this item was $279!

#9 – Duvet Insert $34

I decided to try out a down alternative insert and not sure how I’m going to like it full time.  I’ve always had down but ours is (now super old) has really shed and made a huge mess every time we washed the cover.

#10 – Nightstands, 2 $112 each

Found these at Jerome’s Furniture at a very great price!  I searched all over Offer Up and Facebook Marketplace and it’s been a bit difficult finding matching nightstands with an antique/classic look to them.  I will be replacing the knobs, but I’m happy for now.

#11 – The Chandelier $112

Oh my oh my oh my!  I’m in love with this chandelier and really hope it fits perfectly at the end of our bed.  Will be installing soon so stay tuned.  This chandelier is slightly different than the one on my mood board and where I got the inspiration from.  Lydia Millen (she has such a lovely style to her home), a YouTuber in the U.K., has this chandelier in her living room and it’s such a show stopper. I opted for the extremely cheaper alternative at only $112!

Money Saving Tip:

Always, always use a Bed, Bath, & Beyond coupon…they are easy to get and if you don’t have one “phone a friend” and save 20% off easy!

#12 – BoxSpring

Once we received the bed and mattress, we were able to measure for the exact right size of the box spring. The 7” insures the mattress just barely brushes the bottom of the upholstered headboard.

A Chaise or Chair & Ottoman – I’m considering the Ikea Farlov chair and ottoman.  I really want a comfy spot to sit. I also like the idea of being able to move an ottoman around vs. a Chaise.

Décor – Still need to find some greenery, vases, vanity mirror, and art!

This week is all about the planning process so I can be smart about the fun part, shopping!  Haha.  First and foremost, I wanted to start out with mapping out the exact dimensions of the room.  Sure a bedroom is mostly a rectangular box (ours is 22’x 12’) and you think easy- bed, dresser, nightstands, and décor.  Well once I started getting the exact measurements, I started to find I had a lot less space and I needed to be strategic with where I placed things and what items I actually brought into the space.

The Floor Plan:

With the massive sliding glass doors, the popped-out half of a wall at the far end of the room, and closet, entry, & bathroom doors all on the near side of the room it was evident that the bed only has one wall it can be placed on.

The Bed:

Now for us we could easily have fit a king size bed, but we actually don’t like sleeping in a king.  We’ve done so in our travels and don’t like the massive amount of space between us.  So, we definitely decided to continue to have a queen.  A queen is 60” x 80” and don’t forget an extra few inches for the bed frame.  Also, we want a canopy bed as you might have noticed in my last post, so I can’t forget to measure the ceiling height, 8’.  Bed measurements down, check!

The Rug:

For this I googled and pinterest’ed, “what size should a bedroom rug be?” hands down everyone says 8’ x 10’ for a queen.  Okay done? Well not exactly…I went to measure and it seemed small especially in our big room…so possibly a 9’ x 12’ rug, or will it over-power the room?  Hmm, to stay on the safe side of the professionals I decided to go with 8’ x 10’ for now and I can adjust if needed when shopping later.

The Nightstands:

Living by ourselves for years with only one nightstand, I was quick to purchase matching nightstands.  Well almost matching.  See I have had the Pottery Barn Park Mirrored Nightstand, for years and thought I’ll just grab the same one to match.  Well when you shop online sometimes the coloring is different when it shows up. Ugh!  Mine had champagne colored trim and Pottery Barn had clearly adjusted the newer version because it was a silver brushed trim.  SO close but NOT matching. Blurg!  But we decided to just stick with it for the time being.

So, with that winded explanation matching nightstands in a MUST!  And as for dimensions those are up in the air at the moment because they will play off of the bed that we choose.

The Vanity & Chaise:

Lastly two things we think are important for our space is a vanity (dressing table) and a chair or chaise.  These will be placed on the far wall.  Vanity going under the window…nature light is the best when doing makeup, of course!  Chair because we currently don’t have any seating not even in our closet.  And the vanity because our bathroom is on the small size and currently has just a vanity type cabinet, itself.  No drawers, shelving, just the under-sink area and we added makeshift tupperware drawers. We absolutely hate it.  It will definitely get a makeover sometime in the future so stay tuned.

Dimensions for these items will come into play when shopping but I at least know the vanity desk cannot be taller than 33” and wider than 77.5” or ideally 47.5” so I can hang curtains.

We are doing some major renovating to our home, focusing mainly on the outside. However, I am not the type to just have one thing to focus on. It’s not a good thing, buuuut it is what it is, and I am who I am.

So, I’ve decided to be a bit ambitious and signed up to participate in the One Room challenge™! It is a bi-annual event and currently in its eighteenth season. Many different design influencers participate in order to makeover one room over the course of 6 weeks and share their process. You can check out the event and other participants here. I have a vision of what I want our home to look like, but I get distracted so no one room in our home is fully completed. I look to change that starting with our master bedroom.

When we first purchased our lovely home, we knew it needed a lot of work to the exterior and landscape, but as for the inside it was nicely renovated…except for the master. Here are before photos.

The master bedroom had this tan thick shag carpet and the closet was completely useless!  It had hardly any wall space & had a huge wall directly in front of the floor to ceiling built-in shelves to where you had to shimmy your way over to grab something from the shelves. 

Also, the bedroom door was installed to where when you entered the room the door would swing into the on-suite bathroom door opening. If you wanted to enter the on-suite you would have to close the bedroom door first.  Not well thought-out. 

The bedroom was massive, extending 24ft x 12ft! It had one small window at the far end of the room and a sliding glass door that opens up to the back patio and looks out to our AMAZING view; definitely not complaining.  I knew right away I needed to rip out that carpet and reconfigure the closet. So I hired a friend of ours who does this for a living and we got to work.

Michael was deployed at the time, so I actually moved our belongings into our home all by myself. Not what I had hoped for, but it did allow me to put everything where I wanted, hehe!  I knew we needed the closet to be pushed out and so I was able to renovate it enough to fix the entrance door issue, open up the closet walls, and actually center the sliding glass door in the room.  We wanted to be able to put our bed in the middle of the room directly in front of that door so we could go to bed with a view atop of the valley lights and wake to a lofty morning view of the trees and landscape.  Our bedroom now measures 21ft x 12ft. The flooring is the same engineered hardwood that is throughout majority of our house.

The closet is for another day, just know for now, it is lovely and able to house everything.  It’s in the signature “Chloe’s partially finished room” status.

That renovation was completed in the first month back in August 2017. So, what does our room CURRENTLY look like and what do we want it to look like?

Yes, this is 2020 and you are not seeing things…OUR MATTRESS IS ON THE FLOOR and has been for 3 years!!! Oh my, so embarrassing. And look I’m trying to keep it classy with mismatching throw pillows and blanket. Oh my! You think oh this will only be like this for a month or two, then life gets in the way, finances get tight, and time flies by. Ahh!  It’ is time.

On to the makeover!  We plan to remove everything from this room, old mattress-gone, nightstands-gone (Michael hates them), dresser-gone, mirror-gone.  Hey, it’s not like we had much to begin with.

It’s time to take this room from the floor to adoré!

STYLE & VISION

With 3 years comes a lot of insight on how we use the spaces in our home as well as a look of thinking and pinteresting what we want the house to ultimately be.  We are going to transform our home into our Mediterranean dream!  Think…French and Italian countryside will be seen throughout the home.  We want the home to feel timeless and personal, warm and inviting.  I believe we are looking to have a transitional style.  The home will incorporate stone, terracotta, woven baskets, antique brass, stucco, metals, linen, greenery, and leather. And budget has a hand in the deal so we’ll see what I can conjure up.
