Interview with Amanda Campeanu!

Hey loves – sorry for the super long break! I’m jumping on here today and interviewing one of my faves ever – Amanda! She’s a super talented photographer who inspires me every single day! Hope you enjoy it!

1. What does a typical day in your week look like? How do you structure your days?

Each day is different! Which is why I love it. But typically, I’ll do shooting in the morning (or afternoon depending on the light look I’m going for); I’ll reply to me emails morning and afternoon, have a midday gym session, get in some email pitches and make sure I show up on Instagram.

2. What did you originally do for work before you started working for yourself?

At uni I studied my Bachelor of psychology and criminology, and then went back later to do my Masters in Finance. I’ve worked in project management, accounts, finance, administration, and how I’m here! It’s been a long journey haha.

3. What tips would you give to people who would like to do the work you do?

For those who want to do photography and content creation, I’d highly recommend to firstly find out what kind of photography you LOVE doing.

I initially started out doing stock photography and hated it! I then tried product photography and portraits and fell in love with the process. For those starting out, get a portfolio together, grab some testimonials, put your work out there on social media, and start reaching out to brands to work with.

4. Was it a hard transition from a 9-5 job to working for yourself?

Actually not really! I was was working part-time before I went full-time in my business, so I was only at my job 3 days a week. I had kinda mentally checked out of my job, my business was doing well financially and then I got fired. Haha. So here I am!

But working full-time for yourself, it does get kinda lonely. I’m at home all day while my boyfriend is at work. But I try and take breaks when I need them, get out and exercise and switch things up every now and then.

I’m a homebody though so I do love it.

5. How do you pitch to potential clients?

I email! I do have a system however, which you can find in my Instagram Engagement Formula ebook. In this I break down exactly what I do, how I approach a pitch as well as my pitching template.

6. What’s your go-to camera equipment?

At the moment I’m using a Canon 6D Mark II with a Sigma 35mm 1.4 lens. I’ve got my eye on a Canon 1D though!

7. What are some of your favourite apps for editing clients photos?

Lightroom and Photoshop! I would never use any other editing app to edit for clients. Lightroom is always my go to as you can do SO much with the colours and mood, and I’ll pop it over into photoshop if I need to remove a colour cast or retouch anything.

8. Who/what are your biggest influences?

I LOVE Peter Mckinnon. He’s just incredible at what he does. Jenna Kutcher, and Jasmine Star are my biggest female influencers though.

9. What gave you the confidence to start your work?

I used to blog back in the day so that’s when I kind of entered the online world. I would take all the photos of the blog (they were terrible too!). I was made redundant in 2017 and that’s when I decided I wanted to have my own business to I could financially support myself.

I bought my first DSLR, learned how to use it and I just started from there. With each photoshoot now I become a lot more confident. I’ve recently upgraded my equipment which has actually given me even more confidence when it comes to photoshoots. I know I can create something amazing for the brands I work with. And if something doesn’t work, I just try again.

10. What’s your favourite thing about your job?

Freedom and passion. I’ve finally found something I’m super passionate about and hey, I get to work from home everyday and take a Monday off if I want to! Which is pretty cool. I’m just super grateful I get to do something I love every single day and make a living from it.

I guess most of all though, it’s creative. I’ve always been creative at heart and in all of my corporate jobs my creative side was repressed. Now it’s able to flourish.

That’s everything for today guys. Hope you have an amazing week! 💋
